VINE PATIO

QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS

Bishop Land Design was tasked to develop a concept for the backyard of this Quincy residence. The goal was to upgrade this underutilized, and therefore not maintained, backyard into a family-friendly, highly functional gathering space.

A pergola structure was proposed to be constructed in a durable, lightweight wood to provide a framework for vines to grow onto and thereby provide shade for a new seating area. A kitchen area with a sink and grill replace the existing grill, and an extended bar with seating was added.

The planting scheme was designed to define the space’s functional parameters while beautifying it with climate-resilient, low maintenance plants. The planting palette includes vines and other flowering species that, with their warm colors, bring a tropical vibe to this New England yard surrounded by mature deciduous trees.
